Jesus at Age Twelve

“It tells you in your Scriptures that when he (i.e. Jesus) was 12 years old, he got lost, as it were. Well, one of the things about being a Christ is - you're rather headstrong, and since you already know the outcome of things, you don't always listen to mommy and daddy.

And one of the things that Mary used to trouble herself greatly - oh, and poor Joseph, who felt totally responsible for this little fellow - was the fact that he would go off and not tell them where he was going or that he was going and they were frequently scurrying about hunting for him. Since they lived in a safe community, they never worried about his well-being, simply where he was and had he eaten. But now, at the age of twelve, when they were traveling, he saw an opportunity to go to the temple and there to bestir the minds of the priests.

Now, let us follow this symbolically. Here is the young Christ, the as yet undeveloped fully-developed Christ, entering into the temple - the awareness of the individual as an individual - and challenging, if you will, the concepts held in that temple. He walked up to the priests and he listened to what they had to say and then he said, ‘Well that sounds pretty good, but let me tell you how it really is.’ And he amazed them with his wisdom - wisdom from Buddha (i.e. a past life of jesus). Now, they were enthralled. Here was this child boy teaching them, revealing to them truths hidden in their own religion.

Now, symbolically, this young Christ came into the temple of your concepts, of your belief system, of the things that you have always held to be true from Abraham, Moses, from all of the old concepts, the old prophets, the old masters of your belief system. In comes this upstart and challenges your belief system and, at first you think, ‘Who are you?’ And then you realize that this Christ within you is presenting a truth that you cannot deny. They didn't throw him out. They listened. They questioned him. They were amazed. And so, as this young Christ comes into your awareness, you listen and you begin to recognize that this new thing in you is very real and has something of value to give you.

Mary, representing the balance of Jesus... when they found him, she said, ‘How could you do this to us?’ In other words, the support system questions… what did I teach you this morning… the male energy comes, does, goes, comes, does, goes. Now, Mary was bringing him back in consciousness to the fact that he had to allow a nurturing of the seeds he was sewing. He couldn't just drop some seeds and run away. He said to her, ‘I am about my Father's business.’ Audacious little upstart, eh?

And she reminded him, ‘You are under our care.’ As the nurturing aspect of you desires for you to allow your spiritual truths to develop and unfold, to grow rather than to grasp an idea and think, ‘Oh, I know that,’ and run to the next one before the seed has a chance to take root and establish itself as your reality.”
